ごう【合】

1 〔尺貫法における容積の単位〕 gō 《pl. ～》 (＝約 0.18 l); 〔尺貫法における面積の単位〕 gō 《pl. ～》 (＝約 0.33 m²).

●1合徳利(_どっくり) a ceramic [an earthenware] sake bottle with a capacity of one gō

・1合升(_ます) a one gō measuring box

・1合の酒 a gō of sake.

●十合で一升になる. Ten gō make one shō.

2 〔合戦･試合などにおける衝突･斬り合いの回数〕 a crossing of swords; an exchange 《with swords》; a bout; a round.

●斬りむすぶこと十数合, ついに彼を仕留めた. After closing with him ten or more times, I finally brought [cut] him down.

・実力伯仲, 一合も刀を交えることなく勝負は審判預かりとなった. The opponents were equally matched and neither offered the other an opening to attack, so the match went to the referee for a decision without a single exchange of swords.

●両軍は合戦数合に及ぶも決着がつかないまま夜に入った. A number of engagements [Several encounters] took place between the two armies which continued till nightfall without any clear outcome.

3 〔登山口から山頂までの行程の 10 分の 1〕 a division of any one tenth of the journey from the bottom to the top 《of Mt. Fuji》; one of ten equal stages from the bottom to the top of a mountain.

●八合目 the eighth stage [station] 《of Mt. Fuji》; the eighth stage of the journey up 《Mt. Fuji》.
